Marin County is located northwest of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge and is home to an engaged community of 260,000. The County enjoys an economic base that includes professional services such as insurance, medical, pharmaceutical, technology, financial, and retail employers. Ranching and farming are a rich part of cultural history. The Office of the County Counsel consists of three divisions: Health and Human Services/Public Protection; Litigation; and Land Use and General Government. These divisions receive operational support from the Administrative Services Division. Led by the County Counsel, the Office has an Assistant County Counsel, two managing attorneys, an administrative manager, twelve attorneys, and an eight-person operational support team. The operating budget for fiscal year 2025/2026 is $6.1M.

The County Counsel is the chief legal advisor to the Board of Supervisors, County departments and other political subdivisions within the County and represents the County in litigation and business matters. This position also develops and implements legal compliance strategies, long- and short-range plans, policies, goals and objectives; and leads and directs the Office. The position plays a critical role for the Board of Supervisors and others to promote public interest, achieve programmatic and strategic goals, and protect financial resources. The Board of Supervisors seek a dynamic, forward-thinking leader to serve as its next County Counsel. The annual salary range is $312,645 to $346,341. A 4% Cost of Living increase is scheduled for July 2026. The County of Marin offers a competitive, full benefits package.
