Incorporated in 1883 as a Charter City, the City of Riverside stands proudly at the crossroads where culture, art, history, education, growth and innovation meet. Riverside has been recognized by Safewise as the 14th safest metropolitan city in the United States and it proudly holds the title of the 12th largest city in California and the 6th largest in Southern California. As far as Public Safety, for the past 135 years, the City’s Riverside Fire Department has prided itself in providing the highest level of all-risk fire protection, community education, fire safety inspections, and emergency preparedness planning and training for the Riverside community. Riverside is now seeking an outstanding and forward-facing leader to serve as their next Fire Chief. The incumbent will be a dynamic, collaborative, and inspiring candidate capable of engaging with the City’s diverse community. The ideal candidate must be analytical and make critical data-driven decisions. A strong-minded individual who is comfortable with personnel management and budget control will do well. The Chief will possess the ability to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion practices that benefit the Fire Department and the community. The individual selected will have knowledge of the operational characteristics, services and activities of a comprehensive fire prevention and suppression program. The ideal candidate will have the skills and ability to foster and maintain cooperative relationships with neighboring agencies and communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. The new Chief will possess knowledge of the advanced principles and practices of fire department budget administration. Experience with facility expansion and/or development is advantageous. Qualified candidates possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Fire Science/Public Administration or other related field. Five (5) years of increasingly responsible supervisory and administrative experience at the level of Fire Battalion Chief or above is preferred.

The annual salary range for the Fire Chief is is $219,324 - $331,056. The merit range is from $331,056 - $380,712 and is performance based, and subject to CM approval. Placement within the salary range is dependent on experience and qualifications.
