For 134 years, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has served the residents of the City with professionalism, dependability, and integrity. The mission of the Department is accomplished through the practice of neighborhood-based policing and problem solving through community partnerships.
In accordance with the City Charter, this position is appointed by the Mayor and is confirmed by the City Council. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Police Chief appoints, directs, and supervises Department personnel, subject to the approval of the Mayor and in compliance with the City’s Civil Service Rules. The Police Chief is also responsible for providing leadership and direction for the overall operation and control of all property, equipment, and personnel in the Department. The City of San Diego is seeking a strong, experienced, and knowledgeable law enforcement professional with proven managerial and leadership capabilities to serve as its next Police Chief. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator and collaborator with a strong orientation towards neighborhood policing, and a visionary leader with the ability to assess the current organization.
Desirable candidates are those who can gain the confidence of and build trust with all City staff, elected officials, labor group representatives, and a wide array of community groups and individuals. Experience in the areas of Restorative Justice, 21st Century Policing, and Community Policing are essential for this position. The annual salary range for the incoming Police Chief is $300,000-$350,000; placement within this range is dependent upon the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
