The County of San Diego is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader who will center their leadership around the concepts of restorative justice, diversity, inclusion and belonging, and foster an environment of defenders who are passionate, skilled, and ardent client advocates. Talented criminal attorneys with a specialty in indigent defense, a broad legal background, and demonstrated ability to operate with a leadership style that is transparent, collaborative, and team oriented, while reflecting a high level of ethics and fiscal and administrative responsibility are encouraged to apply.

The San Diego County Public Defender’s Office was established in 1988 by county resolution and is recognized as one of the finest in the nation. The Public Defender’s office values diversity and works to protect the rights, liberties, and dignity of all persons in San Diego County and maintain the integrity and fairness of the American Justice System by providing the finest legal representation. This position oversees the creation, implementation, and improvement of programs and services, protocol, and procedures relating to all aspects of cases the Department defends. Qualified candidates are active members of the State Bar of California in good standing; have been a practicing attorney in all courts of the State for at least five (5) years preceding appointment; and possess administrative or supervisory experience over attorneys providing legal counsel and indigent defense services in a Department of the Public Defender or comparable office that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the classification.

The hiring salary range for the Public Defender is $250,000 - $300,000 annually with an excellent benefits package; placement within this range is dependent on qualifications and experience.
