The City of Fresno, CA is located in the heart of the state in the fertile San Joaquin Valley. From the agricultural fields on the valley floor to the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the Fresno area offers something for everyone. Fresno offers excellent housing that is available at price levels that are considerably lower than California’s other large metropolitan areas. The current median home price in Fresno is approximately $420,000. Many consider Fresno to be a community of the perfect size, offering the best of urban amenities and opportunities along with the unique charms and easy living of a smaller town. Residents enjoy a wide variety of social, cultural, athletic, educational, and recreational activities in an affordable and clean-living environment. Fresno is a full-service city under a “Strong Mayor” form of government. The City Council is comprised of seven Council Members who are elected by district to four-year overlapping terms. The Council appoints the City Attorney and City Clerk.

The City Attorney plays a vital role in the accomplishment of the City Council’s mission and goals. To this end, the City Attorney is responsible for directing and supervising the administration of programs, policies, and procedures of the City Attorney’s Office. The City Attorney will direct the preparation and administration of codes, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, leases, and other legal documents; supervise professional staff in preparation for civil trial cases; and lead the investigation of claims and complaints for and against the City. The ideal candidate is a highly competent professional and strong generalist, with a solid record of pre-trial risk assessment, and an in-depth understanding of issues confronting California cities. The new City Attorney possesses a thorough understanding of local government law and the legal principles, practices, and precedents that are directly related to the role and responsibilities of a City Attorney. Candidates must be duly licensed as an attorney-at-law under the laws of the State of California with at least five (5) years of experience in the practice of law and possess a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law. Candidates who possess extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of local government law and who have the ability to manage a large, complex law office will be most competitive. Active membership in the State Bar of California is required.

The annual salary range is dependent upon qualifications and experience. The City also offers an excellent benefits package.
