The State Bar of California’s mission is to protect the public and includes the primary functions of licensing, regulation, and discipline of attorneys; the advancement of the ethical and competent practice of law; and support of efforts for greater access to, and inclusion in, the legal system.

The top priorities of the State Bar are to:

License attorneys and regulate the profession and practice of law in California

Discipline attorneys who violate rules and laws

Manage all aspects of admission to the practice of law

Advance access to the legal system

Promote diversity and inclusion in the legal system

The State Bar is a highly regulated agency and is subject to significant public and stakeholder scrutiny. As the chief legal officer for the State Bar, the General Counsel must demonstrate a high degree of legal acumen as well as an understanding and sensitivity to the complex environment in which the State Bar operates. The General Counsel is responsible for overseeing, planning, organizing, and directing the legal staff and legal work of the State Bar, and provides legal advice, counsel, and representation to the State Bar. The State Bar is seeking a politically astute and mission driven candidate with a proven record of forward thinking and problem solving. The ideal candidate is ethical, innovative, adaptive, and responsive, with experience in a diverse array of legal practice areas, litigation, and personnel and organizational management. The new General Counsel has the proven ability to build strong teams and has experience offering practical and meaningful legal advice. The ideal candidate is a servant leader with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and has the proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Qualified candidates possess a Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school along with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible active experience in the practice of law, including experience in a public entity or institutional representation; and five (5) years of senior management experience in administering personnel and budget requirements. A Master’s degree in a relevant field may substitute for up to two (2) years of experience. The new General Counsel has a demonstrated verifiable reputation of integrity and must be an active member in good standing in the State Bar of California. The annual salary range for the General Counsel in 2022 is $191,000 – $286,000; placement within this range is dependent upon qualifications. The State Bar also offers an attractive benefits package.
