The City of Newark is located in Southern Alameda County at the east end of the Dumbarton Bridge, 20 miles south of Oakland, 15 miles north of San Jose, and on the edge of Silicon Valley. Newark was incorporated as a General Law City in 1955 and has a Council/Manager form of government. Newark’s population is approximately 47,000 with an encompassed area of approximately 13 square miles. The City is seeking an innovative, community-minded, experienced Chief Building Official who can lead the Building Inspection Division toward its impressive potential.

The City of Newark is seeking a candidate who possesses strong management skills to lead a team of experienced building inspection professionals and support staff. The candidate will be an individual who is trustworthy, approachable, honest, and ethical. A Chief Building Official who will create a teamwork-oriented environment that emphasizes collaboration, accountability and responsiveness is sought. Customer service should be a number one priority for the new Chief Building Official, as will patience and sensitivity to the needs of the community. The successful candidate will possess the necessary communication and interpersonal skills needed to work successfully with elected officials, City staff, developers, outside agencies and the community.

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university, with a major in engineering, architecture, construction management, or a closely related field; and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in construction, building inspection, building design, plan checking, civil engineering, structural engineering, or similar fields, at least two of which must be in a supervisory role. Certifications from the International Code Council are required within one year of employment.

The salary range for Chief Building Official is $10,738 – 15,571 per month. In addition to salary, the City offers an excellent benefits package.
