California State University, Sacramento is a regional university with a student population in excess of 30,000. The 300-acre campus, located just five miles from the State Capitol, is situated along the American River parkway that offers miles of trails and recreational access to the City’s two rivers, Folsom Lake, and the historic Sacramento riverfront. The University is seeking a Chief of Police experienced working in a collective bargaining environment, is sensitive to political issues and can offer clear, concise, and coordinated communication between the University and neighboring municipalities. Furthermore, the University is seeking a candidate who understand the needs of a campus community, including the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, is committed to the tenets of 21st Century Policing, and can facilitate the process of reimagining what policing could look like on campus. Candidates for the position of Chief of Police are required to possess a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public or business administration, or a related field. A master’s degree is highly desirable, as is law-enforcement experience at an institution of higher education. Candidates must have a minimum of fifteen (15) years of law enforcement experience, including at least four (4) years of management and administrative responsibility at the command level (Lieutenant or above). Possession of a California POST basic certificate or have the ability to obtain a California POST certificate within one year is required; possession of a California POST management certificate is preferred, as is completion of the FBI National Academy, California POST Command College, and/or the California Police Chiefs Executive Leadership Institute.
