The State Bar of California, an administrative arm of the California Supreme Court, licenses attorneys and regulates the profession and practice of law in California. The State Bar is currently seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources (HR Director). This position is a member of the State Bar’s Executive Team, serves under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, and oversees a team of eleven HR staff. The State Bar’s 580 employees are divided between its offices in downtown San Francisco and downtown Los Angeles. The HR Director can be based in either office and will require frequent travel between offices. The ideal candidate has advanced knowledge of and experience with laws and regulations pertaining to human resources and labor relations; HR and labor relations policy development and administration, preferably in a government, legal, judicial or related environment; and principles of effective personnel management, preferably in a government and union environment. He or she is a strong manager and leader who is capable of motivating and mentoring staff; someone who holds staff accountable and pushes them to achieve their full potential, while promoting a culture of collaboration and teamwork. He or she is a strategic thinker and creative problem-solver; thrives in a fast-paced environment and performs well under pressure; is highly organized and possesses strong time management skills; and has excellent communication skills. At a minimum, candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a field that develops skills related to the essential duties of the position, and have eight (8) years’ progressively responsible experience in related program administration, including a minimum of four (4) years’ senior level management experience administering personnel and budget requirements. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of experience. The annual salary range for this position is $149,000-$199,000, DOQ.
